Whole Women, Partly Women: How Women are Used as Objects

This 7-page graduate paper presents an analytical view of the objectification of women. Specifically, this paper considers the sexual objectification of women in cultural texts, suggesting the ways that objectification leads to low self-esteem for women and also greater exposure to violence. Beginning with a brief overview of theoretical ideas about the objectification of women, this paper considers how women are used as objects in advertisements. In this context, this paper considers related terms such as “the male gaze” to describe the way that visuality plays a role in treating women as objects. This paper then examines the self-objectification which occurs when women internalize the objectification of women. Finally, this paper considers the objectification of women in terms of rape, arguing that objectification both allows for rape to occur, and rape further creates the idea of women as object.
