This essay describes the impact of tourism on host cultures. Specifically, it questions whether we can objectively measure the impact of tourism on a culture. The answer, by and large, is that we cannot. Too many factors exists that either muddy the waters, making it impossible to see which effects are those of tourism, or make a foreign culture opaque and unknowable.
