In the twelfth century, the world was a disconnected place. Societies, in general, knew little about the outside world. Geographic and cultural boundaries served to isolate communities from one another. It was during this time of isolationism in Eurasia, that the Mongols began to change everything.
Although known through history as a bloodthirsty horde of conquerors, the Mongols became instrumental to Eurasias development. Despite their vicious methods, the Mongol expansion during the twelfth and thirteenth century brought the once isolated sections of Eurasia together, fostering trade routes and cultural exchanges. Through conquest, the Mongols became a coalescing force across the vast continent.
