The Efficient Society, the Pragmatic Society, Nothing New

This essay is an argumentative essay that does acknowledge the contribution of Joseph Heath to social organization. Heath argues that there is no utopia, but rather a second best as good as it gets society that is pragmatically efficient. The ideal state will employ both free market principles and government intervention, according to which role is the most important. This second best is an efficient society, with Canada a model of this style of society. While essentially not arguing against Heath's pragmatic approach, this essay does argue against his assumption that the efficient state as he calls it, is a modern invention. In fact, efficiency, as pragmatism, is probably something that has been present to some degree in many, if not all, societies.
