This paper considers some of the causes identified for prison riots, noting the effect of overcrowding and the removal of various privileges as well as efforts to solve the problem by making prison harsher, which has been counterproductive, considering research into why this occurs so that controls can be put in place to reduce tensions and prevent riots from forming.
