This paper outlines two of the great theorists - Thorndike (Connectionist) and Kohler (Gestalt). The paper examines the individual theories of both men, Kohler for his Mentality of Apes work and Thorndike for his Puzzlebox theory and then discusses Kohlers objections to Thorndikes experimental design as outlined in Kohlers Mentality Apes. The paper concludes with a personal opinion on the viewpoint of Kohler.
