Investigating the Impetus of Alcoholism Treatment: Alcoholism and the Motivational Influences that Encourage Alcoholics and Alcoholic Abusers to Seek Out Treatment.

Alcoholism is classified as a disease, where the alcohol abuser is not in control of his or her behaviors in respect to imbibing alcohol. Research has made significant progress in discovering the factors that influence alcoholism, such as those relating to specific genetic, social, and environmental factors. However, while the research into these areas denotes a need for the realization that alcoholism is influenced through a wide range of factors, the research into what influences an alcoholic or an alcohol abuser to seek out treatment is less extensive. Research of this type could provide data that would encourage alcoholics to motivate themselves to seek out treatment on their own, before the physiological and psychological deterioration of alcohol reached a critical period. This paper explores the social and environmental impetus that drives an alcoholic to seek treatment. This paper takes the form of a research study in which alcoholics in treatment programs complete a survey that addresses those factors that motivated them into seeking treatment. There is an extensive review of the applicable literature. 65 pgs. Bibliography lists 40 sources.
