This paper discusses how Stendahl and Tolstoy were both very insightful students of war and its impact on human society, but their different nationalities and their different perceptions of the Napoleonic wars drove them to write novels that shared acute observations of war, but that were set in different contexts entirely, with subsequent different effects on their readers. 5 pgs. 4 f/c. 2b.
