This essay examines the theories of international relations put forth by three major political scientists and assesses their applicability to the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. Gilpin's real political view, Keohane's neo liberal institutional view and Waltz's neorealist view are all examined and the lessons of each applied in retrospect to the historical realities of the demise of a superpower.
