The Incompleteness of Free Will and Consciousness: Godel, Determinism, and Mechanical Minds
This paper examines the question of free will and consciousness as they might apply to the problem of mechanical intelligences. Is it possible to design a mechanical system that possesses free will, or will the choices made by the mechanical system always be prescribed by its own programming? Drawing on Godel's Incompleteness Theorem and others, this paper argues that consciousness and free will are inexorably bound together and that Godel actually leaves open the possibility of mechanical intelligence within his own theorem.
