Two questions are answered in this essay. One looks at the contrasting views held by Socrates and Hobbes on morality, and how these vierws shaped the political communities they subsequently championed. The other compares and contrasts Hobbes' and Aritotles' views the origins of the the political state. They radically differ. Aristotle's view is more or less optomistic, Hobbes' darkly pessismistic.
