This paper discusses some of the more logical and hidden reasons why the nursing shortage is not only at epidemic proportions in the USA but around the world. It looks at perceptions of nursing, and how that has changed from the time of Florence Nightingale, and makes a few suggestions as to how this growing trend in shortages of staff could be reversed.
