This essay discusses how Eugene O'Neil's "Long Day's Journey Into Night" uses the Freudian theory of the unconscious in the stream-of-consciousness dialogue. The play is about a dysfunctional family, whose summer on the shore is filled with abuse of alcohol and drug addiction. Yet the family is in severe denial about this abuse.
