This essay compares two English novels, Tess of the D'Urbervilles and Sister Carrie that are roughly contemporary with each other. Both are naturalist novels. The essay explores free will and free agency as it is depicted in these novel. In particular, the focus is on the female lead characters, both of whom are what could be considered 'fallen women'.
