An Ideological Analysis of Stepmom and Falling Down .
Stepmom and Falling Down represent two particularly fascinating - and, as will be seen, complementary - images of the American empire. This paper will argue that both films are radically conservative in terms of their ideological treatment of gender, race, and culture; the conservatism being overt in Falling Down and covert in Stepmom. However, as will be seen, Falling Down is built upon the everyday experiences of its "ideal viewers" while Stepmom is, in essence, an emotional fantasy that does not engage its audience intellectually. Given this difference, it will be argued that Stepmom is the better vehicle for the propagation of American economic, sexual and cultural ideologies. 6 pgs. No bibliography lists provided.
