The Easter Rebellion Of 1916 And The Emerging Political System In Northern Ireland, 1916-1921.

This paper discusses the political, social and economic climate which resulted in the Easter Rebellion of 1916 in Northern Ireland. The study begins by considering the context in which the rising took place, before outlining how the political system evolved in Northern Ireland as a result. Some of the major reasons for the uprising that will be outlined in this essay are the Home Rule movement, the public 'mood' and domestic conditions caused by the Great War, and the legacy of suppression and economic control that led to the desire to throw off the English yoke in 1916. The political system which emerged in the North was based on the new Home Rule bill of 1920. It spelled out that Northern Ireland would consist of the six Ulster counties whose exclusion from Home Rule had been proposed in 1916. 'Southern' Ireland was comprised of the remaining 26 counties. Each was to have its own parliament and senate. But as we will see, some profound and lasting problems were to plague the partitioned nation's politics, largely because these were - in reality - two separate nations with differing identities. 16 pgs. bibliography lists 12 sources.
