This five-page undergraduate paper examines slavery in ancient Rome. The author notes that although slavery was a prevailing feature of all Mediterranean countries in antiquity, the Romans had more slaves and depended more on them than any other people. The largest numbers of slaves lived their brief lives in Italy itself, in the heart of the Roman world, and especially in the capital of Rome, where great numbers worked in the imperial households and in the civil service.
