The ADA and Title V: Campus Effects.

The passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act brought people with all forms of physical, mental, and emotional disabilities the guarantee of equal opportunities and treatment in all forms of public discourse. From schools and jobs to public transportation and building access, the ADA particularly opened the door of public education to the disabled. What we now call special education came from the ADA, and all of the services offered to the disabled in forms of job assistance, residential placements, transportation, and medical services came from Title V of the Rehabilitation Act. While much of the public awareness of the ADA and Title V has come from public schools serving grades K-12, a great deal has been done for students with disabilities of all types at the college level. It is the purpose of this paper to explore these services and accommodations available to the disabled college student, to discuss the effectiveness of these services, and to argue for their continued use. 4-pages, bibliography lists 4 sources.
