This 3-page graduate paper is a statement of purpose which examines why the field of international relations in a graduate career would be beneficial, personally and professionally. This paper concludes that the study of International Relations offers a greater understanding of the author’s place in the world, encourages the development of critical thinking skills, and facilitates the development of skills and knowledge needed for effective democratic political participation. Within the context of a career, International Relations is important in its pursuit of interdisciplinary and wide-ranging topics. Understanding International law, International bodies, and the negotiations of International Political states is important in understanding otherness and in understanding world events. As most companies are involved with International bodies, either as markets, clients, or production bases, it is important to understand how international affairs affect business. This paper notes that being able to examine world events from a critical perspective allows students of International Relations to make important leadership decisions aimed at creating justice and ethical choices in local settings and in the wider world.
