Four separate questions are addressed in this paper: The role of the Silk Road and Isaac Newton in early global political economic, Mercantilist, Liberal and Marxist political economic explanations of the hegemony of the West over China and the role of hard and soft power in the determination of 19th century British free trade and of 20th century the U.S.s interwar pro-gold policies.
