Standard Minimum Sentencing Laws: A Misguided Approach to Criminal Justice

This paper shall examine the issue of minimum standard sentencing laws in regard to the field and discipline of criminal justice. While both the pros and cons of the issue will be presented, the author argues throughout the essay that minimum sentencing laws are little more than political tools used to appease the public and win elections. There is no evidence that minimum sentences actually contribute to a significant reduction crime rates – instead, they are simply symbolic political acts.
