This paper examines the image of the father in Nino Ricci's "Lives of the Saints" and Roddy Doyle's "Paddy Clarke, Ha Ha Ha". Paddy's father is distant and pre-occupied, dismissive and cursory in his attention to his children. The situation is more complex as the 'father' is absent in Lives of the Saints and various surrogates, including Vittorio's mother, her lover and grandparents must fill this role. 9 pgs.
