Isolation in literature is necessary for the development of the hero, of the protagonist, and of societies depicted. Isolation gives the characters the excuse they need to focus on themselves in a very intense manner. This paper examines the use of literary isolation in terms of character identity and political transformation in "Animal Farm", by George Orwell, and "The English Patient", by Michael Ondaatje. 6 pgs, bibliography lists 2 sources.
