Organization Design and Structure - Keeping Up in Today's Fast Paced World

In today’s business world, companies have to look for any advantage they glean to make them more competitive. There are at least two different administrative mechanisms are available for the small business manager to develop and to pursue a competitive strategy. One refers to managerial skills needed to implement and to follow the competitive strategy chosen by the firm. The other refers to the design of organization structure -that is, how job tasks are divided, grouped, and coordinated. (Barth, 2003) Organization structure is one of the more ubiquitous facets of an organization, (Clegg & Hardy, 1996) and must continually evolve to meet the organizations goals. Organization design is “the overall set of structural elements and the relationships among those elements used to manage the total organization. (It’s a) means to implement strategies and plans to achieve organizational goals.” (“Managing organization”, n.d.)
