There are a number of criteria that organizations can use to determine compensation, and also to determine other compensation incentives and benefits. Five criteria that are sometimes used are: performance; length of service; seniority; market survey data (also called benchmarking) and defined salary range (Physician Compensation Report). One might think that performance is the best and fairest criterion to use. However, in practice it is not the most common criterion used.
