This paper is a review of the book At Odds: Gambling and Canadians, 1919-1969 by Suzanne Morton, a book that says much about aspects of gambling that many people never consider at all, embodying the ways in which the issue really reflects the other social issues that obsess us today, including gender, race, and social status, leading to the situation today with government-sponsored gambling in the form of lotteries.
