A Critical Review of Buchi Emecheta's "The Joys of Motherhood"
Within this paper, I begin by offering a brief introduction to the history of Africa before situating Buchi Emecheta's "The Joys of Motherhood" within such a historical framework. I argue that "The Joys of Motherhood" includes major characters and minor characters who provide us with examples that can be used to destabilize ethnocentric viewpoints regarding foreign cultures. I also examine how some of Emecheta's characters highlight the complex relationship that develops when different cultural ideologies clash and collide.
