Even the title of the website sounds somewhat pretentious, www.whitehouse.gov. ItÂ’s as though the White House or the offices contained therein have something so valuable to say that they need to have their own website in which to do it. One could certainly argue that the United States government is quite simply keeping up with the times. However, should government really be run like Nike with a website from which to spout their advertisements? If one thought the days of propaganda were gone, then he would be sadly remiss. This website is organized for press releases and information filtered through the Oval Office that is precisely intended for an audience. In short, it has been thoroughly glossed over so that whatever foot is put forward is exactly the foot that the United States government or, more to the real point, the president and all of his advisors wish to put forth. Yes, this is common with any other website on the web. They all attempt to furnish information that is limited to propaganda for expanding a business or surging forward with an ideology. But, one cannot fault a business for attempting to achieve this through technology, nor can one fault websites that try to champion a cause. But, the United States government should not be participating in either. There must be some format that allows information to be checked, balanced, and questioned before a site such as this could be truly effective in keeping the public abreast of the true daily dealings of the Oval Office. And it is the lack of checks and balances to the presentation of this information that causes the press releases viewed on the web site to become nothing more than a transparent mouthpiece of government attempting to influence the thoughts of not only Americans, but of the international world.
