The author notes that the movement of the steel industry across the United States began in the middle of the nineteenth-century when surveyors discovered the massive iron ore deposits in the Great Lakes states. The steel industry prospered for more than a century in America and was especially important during the two world wars. But the increase in foreign steel competition, as well as other economic developments, have led to a crisis in the American steel industry.
