This paper discusses the importance of ethnic identity. One quite visible phenomenon has been occurring in the United States since the 1960s that has challenged the minds of sociologists, other thinkers and observers. Waves of immigrants and their descendants, 60 million as of recent count, have entered and settled in the Continent from practically every country in the world (Jacoby 2003). What is startling is that they now constitute a fifth of the entire population, assuming a whole range of occupations and all socioeconomic levels - businessmen and women to unskilled laborers, night or day, in every region of this county. Nothing says how their sheer number can or will bring about any kind of transformation, positive or negative, but everyone is watching, wide-eyed.
