This paper examines the contrasting viewpoints that the early American colonists had of the Native American population by examining Benjamin Franklin's Remarks Concerning Savages in North America and also Mary Rowlandson's captivity narrative. The paper asserts that the former uses the image of Native American society to justify the colonial revolution while the latter uses the image to reinforce self-righteous cultural identity of the colonists.
