Civil War Artillery: Effects of Artillery During the American Civil War.
This paper discusses how artillery played a prominent role in nearly all of the major Civil War battles, and a decisive role in many of them. The heavy influence of artillery in determining the outcome of Civil War battles continued the trend that began in the Napoleonic Wars. The relative importance of cavalry and infantry declined when it was seen that they simply could not prevail on an open battlefield against well-directed and sustained artillery fire. 7.5 pgs. 12 f/c. 15b.
